I, of course checked the connection with audio from another application which worked fine. One thing I did that helped resolve the issue was to change my laptop's power settings to never put the USB ports into a "power save" mode. Just mash DEL or F2 or whatever it is on bootup to enter your BIOS and wander around there until you find the appropriate onboard sound - enabled/disabled option. In the new window click the Hardware tab then click Device Manager. I rolled back to Windows 7, and most issues were resolved -- except the no sound issue. Updating a driver was a very easy thing for me coz Driver Talent could do that with my mouse click.
